Before You Visit a Urologist for Premature Ejaculation, Read This

Know your options before you accept your first prescription

Direct and practical Evidence-informed Informed choices

1Understand What You’re Seeking Treatment For

Premature ejaculation (PE) can bring stress, anxiety, and strain to a relationship. When you feel desperate for a quick fix, it’s easy to skip important questions. Take time to understand your condition and options before your appointment. A lot of times you might be given a treatment that may not match your future goals.

2The SSRI Discussion: What You Should Know

SSRIs were developed as antidepressants, but doctors also prescribe them for PE because they can delay ejaculation.1

Established Recognised sexual side effects include reduced libido, delayed orgasm, and erectile difficulties. Some men experience these while on treatment.2

SSRIs can be a reasonable option for many men. The aim is to know the trade-offs. Never stop prescribed medication on your own; speak to your doctor first.

3Fertility Considerations

Less certain Some research suggests certain SSRIs may affect sperm quality and motility. Therefore, it is important to keep things clear from the start and inform your doctor that you want a treatment that doesn’t involve any side-effects on the ability of a couple to conceive.

If you’re planning to conceive, discuss this with your doctor before starting medication.

4Ask Better Questions

Good urologists welcome informed patients. Ask:

1
Why is this treatment being recommended for me?
2
What are its short- and long-term side effects?
3
Are non-SSRI alternatives appropriate?
4
Could it affect my fertility or sexual function?
Your treatment deserves the same attention as your diagnosis.
